Block printing is an ancient textile art, practised for over two millennia and deeply rooted in Bangladesh’s heritage. Artisans hand-carve intricate motifs onto wooden blocks, pressing them onto fabric to create patterns rich in rhythm and cultural memory. Regions such as Narayanganj, Dhaka, Rangpur, and Manikganj remain vital centres of this craft. At Aarong, block printing is preserved and reimagined through the Ayesha Abed Foundation, with the Manikganj Block Printing Library safeguarding generations of designs. Skilled artisans work with a range of dyes, both traditional and modern, selecting hues that are vibrant, enduring, and suited to each textile’s purpose. Beyond decoration, block printing embodies heritage, skill, and the resilience of Bangladesh’s artisanal tradition.
