The Jamdani Festival is a celebration of the proud heritage of Jamdani weaving in Bangladesh and the outstanding skill and artistic finesse of present-day weavers. Organised by National Crafts Council of Bangladesh and Bengal Foundation, the main exhibition will be on view from 6 September - 12 October, 2019 at Bengal Shilpalay in Dhanmondi, Dhaka.
The organisers, in an attempt to restore the Jamdani to its original excellence, have taken the initiative to collect original designs from museums and private collections from within the country and abroad. Master weavers, as well as some of the finest artisans from the younger generation, have been supplied with the best quality khadi yarn, and have been tasked with replicating these designs. The weavers were commissioned by Aarong, Aranya, Tangail Saree Kutir and Kumudini, four of the organisations in the country working with crafts, to ensure a market for future production.
Aarong proudly participates in the exhibition which will showcase the reproduction of Jamdani sarees and fabrics which have achieved a 200 count cotton thread production and is the finest quality of Jamdani textiles ever made this generation.
The Festival organisers have also proposed to the World Crafts Council to grant Sonargaon the status of 'World Crafts City'. The geographic and ecological context of the Sitalakhya River has also helped make Sonargaon unique in the production of its fine cotton and helped sustain Jamdani communities for centuries.
Bring your family and friends to experience this exciting milestone of Bangladesh’s Jamdani weaving heritage and enjoy this celebration of reviving artisanal crafts!
