A Life Transformed: How BRAC’s Interventions Empowered Nargis Akhter
From Desperation to Hope: The Poultry Farm That Changed Everything
In the remote village of Parla, Magura, where opportunities are scarce, Nargis Akhter’s life took a dramatic turn when BRAC set up a poultry farm in 1999. Born into poverty, Nargis had been thrust into a financial crisis after her brother-in-law absconded with the family’s savings. Desperate for a way out, she joined the newly established farm, finding not just a job, but a community. It was here that she encountered Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, BRAC’s compassionate founder, whose personal touch and care left a lasting impression on her.

A New Chapter: From Poultry to Preserving Heritage
When BRAC’s poultry operations ceased in 2019, Nargis feared for her future. But her story was far from over. Aarong, a BRAC social enterprise, opened an Ayesha Abed Foundation production center on the same site, offering a new path as an artisan. Nargis embraced this opportunity, mastering the intricate art of screen printing. Her determination and pursuit of perfection led her to excel, transforming her financial situation. From struggling to make ends meet, she became a key breadwinner, lifting her family out of poverty.

The Safety Net: Healthcare When It Mattered Most
In 2023, Nargis faced yet another trial—a tumor that required surgery. Once again, BRAC’s support came through. Aarong’s Health Security Scheme, a co-contributory fund by Aarong and the artisan, covered her medical expenses, allowing her to recover and return to work. This time, healthier and more resilient than ever.
A Legacy of Empowerment
Nargis Akhter’s journey is a powerful testament to the transformative impact of BRAC’s interventions. From providing immediate financial relief to fostering long-term empowerment through artisan skill development and healthcare, BRAC has touched every aspect of her life. Today, Nargis not only thrives as an artisan but also serves as a mentor to younger women in her community. As she looks forward to retirement, her story stands as a beacon of hope, resilience, and the enduring power of opportunity.
