Aarong Producer Achieves Global Recognition from World Craft Council
We are delighted to announce that Billal Uddin, one of Aarong's talented producers, has been honoured with the prestigious Award of Excellence from the World Craft Council. This accolade recognises his exceptional creativity, dedication to tradition, and skilled craftsmanship in the art of crafting exquisite wooden jewellery boxes. Inspired by the traditional "Sandash" (Milk Cake) mold, these jewellery boxes feature four distinct designs, each with unique cultural meanings. These boxes harmoniously fuse motifs based on four profound Bengali customs and traditions - Subho Bibaho, Jibon Brikkho, Hridoy Pori, and Kolka with contemporary design elements. By employing age-old techniques passed down through generations, Billal preserves his artistry and celebrates Bangladesh's cultural legacy, merging traditional design with contemporary functionality.
Born on 18th April 1959, Billal Uddin began his craft journey at a young age. In 1989, he opened his first workshop in Badda, Dhaka, marking the start of his entrepreneurial career.
In 1996, Billal became an Aarong producer. His workshop in Badda now employs ten artisans, demonstrating his significant growth. Aarong's support has facilitated access to a larger market, while ensuring fair compensation and maintaining high product standards.
The World Craft Council, established in 1964, plays a vital role in promoting and preserving traditional arts on a global scale. Its prestigious awards recognise artisans who exemplify excellence, innovation, and a deep commitment to cultural heritage. Aarong proudly nominated Billal Uddin’s remarkable work for this award, highlighting his innovative design and creativity, as well as his significant contribution to the advancement of this craft.
Through comprehensive training programs in craftsmanship, entrepreneurship, and business management, Aarong empowers producers and artisans with the skills necessary to innovate, sustain their craft, and foster socio-economic development in Bangladesh. The recognition from the WCC serves as a powerful source of inspiration for us to continue our mission of supporting the artisans of Bangladesh and celebrating their exceptional craftsmanship.
