Supporting Artisan Well-being: Two-day-long health camp

At BRAC-Aarong, the Social Compliance & Producer Development (SCPD) Department stands as a keystone approach dedicated to enhancing the lives of artisans, prioritising their overall well-being alongside their craftsmanship. Beyond their commitment to maintaining the quality of craftsmanship, they are deeply invested in providing holistic support to artisans through different welfare schemes. Amongst those, various health benefits hold a place of prime importance. 

One of the key health interventions of SCPD is organising health camps in partnership with the local hospitals. In line with this commitment, in collaboration with Ayesha Abed Foundation, Gorpara, and Manikganj United Hospital, SCPD recently organized a two-day-long free health camp for the artisans and their families. Under 6 main health camps in Bagjan, Boro Binnalai, Panjankhara, Uttar Railla, Ranadiya, and Uttar Tilli, they successfully reached artisans from 36 sub-centers. A remarkable total of 2,746 artisans and their family members received general health check-ups and medical assistance during this initiative.

SCPD’s approach to the welfare of the artisans is not just confined to arranging health camps. Maloti (Pseudonym), an artisan from Chandair shared her story of gratitude during this health camp. She mentioned how during a critical health crisis, involving a tumor in the uterus, she received monetary support of BDT 30,000 from SCPD for her surgery. Today she has recovered fully and continues her work as an artisan, a role she has proudly served for 20 years.

These initiatives and schemes exemplify BRAC-Aarong’s belief that sustainable development denotes not only economic development but the overall well-being of artisans. The SCPD Department remains committed to the mission of supporting the artisan, fostering their craftsmanship along with ensuring betterment in every aspect of their lives so that they can thrive both professionally and personally.
